In this stunning bridge book between Cress and Winter in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles, Queen Levana’s story is finally told.
Mirror, mirror on the wall,
Who is the fairest of them all?
Fans of the Lunar Chronicles know Queen Levana as a ruler who uses her “glamour” to gain power. But long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress, Levana lived a very different story – a story that has never been told . . . until now.
Marissa Meyer spins yet another unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book includes full-color art and an excerpt from Winter, the next book in the Lunar Chronicles series.
Um. Wow. Unrequited love, a sadistic psychopathic sister and her downright spiral into evil, Levana really makes you want to sympathize and even pity her. Fairest is set when she is about sixteen years old to the time she’s in her early twenties I’m assuming. It really does set the tone for how she acts in all of the previous books.
Now that I have a better understanding of where she came from and what she had to deal with, her absentee parents, her beautiful and mostly cruel older sister Channery..I can begin to understand why she wanted to rise to become empress of the galaxy. She is good at it. She’s good at protecting her country, her home because it’s all she has left. As I kept reading I slowly grew more horrified. The scars, the pain, the manipulation that happened..I knew it could be so, but I didn’t want it to happen. And even with her family problems, she happened to crush on one of her guards who so happened to be with a family. This is unrequited love at its finest, and Marissa Meyer does it so well. I even felt sorry for her. It just so happens that she started her powers for mind control and manipulation here. No doubt it was sparked by her crazy sister. You can see the selfishness start to creep, the sinister thoughts that awaken at every turn. I was a little creeped out to be honest.
I loved Fairest. It definitely added to the overall world building experience. To catch a glimpse into the point of view of a villain must be a hard thing to do, but nonetheless, I enjoyed it. Wholly 5 stars for me because I know I will be thinking about some of the scenes in here for a long time. Fireplaces will not be the same for me after reading this.
