Monument 14: Savage Drift by Emmy Laybourne
Published by Macmillan on May 6th, 2014
The stunningly fierce conclusion to Emmy Laybourne's Monument 14 trilogy.
The survivors of the Monument 14 have finally made it to the safety of a Canadian refugee camp. Dean and Alex are cautiously starting to hope that a happy ending might be possible.
But for Josie, separated from the group and trapped in a brutal prison camp for exposed Type Os, things have gone from bad to worse. Traumatized by her experiences, she has given up all hope of rescue or safety.
Meanwhile, scared by the government's unusual interest in her pregnancy, Astrid (with her two protectors, Dean and Jake in tow) joins Niko on his desperate quest to be reunited with his lost love Josie.
Author Emmy Laybourne reaches new heights of tension and romance in this action-packed conclusion to the Monument 14 trilogy.
Hey everyone! I’m Emmy Laybourne, author of the MONUMENT 14 series. It’s such a pleasure to be here with Giselle today, chatting up SAVAGE DRIFT. I had such a great time up in Toronto last June with the Fierce Reads tour – I wanted to be sure to reach out to my Canadian brothers and sisters!
Killer Cover Art
I will be honest with you – I love being with a major publishing house.
I greatly admire authors who self-publish, because I know that they often have to do EVERYTHING (or find someone to do it). Not only do they have to write the blessed book, they have to get it edited, set into a format, have a cover designed, market it and more! Whew!
But I will also admit that I’ve always kind of wanted to helm the cover design aspect. There is something so intoxicating about working with artists to bring to light the spirit of a work of fiction (especially one you yourself have written!).
So when I decided to write a short story to give away as a part of a Pre-Order campaign for my next novel, SAVAGE DRIFT, I was psyched to work with an artist. Through Elance (Yes, Elance!) I found the work of the gifted artist Julia Soboleva, from Latvia. She accepted my offer and we began to work.
Here were her first sketches:
Here’s what Julia said about them:
Though I loved her approach – and felt she, as an artist, really got Max, the apple drawings felt a bit too stylized – and not quite from the right time period. I really liked the image with the two hands, but Julia said she wanted to do more sketches.. (My most specific note was that Max HAD to have a cowlick – one of my favorite things about him is his absurd tuft of hair that cannot be tamed!)
Julia came back a few days later with a second series.
I was now torn between two covers. I loved the image of Max holding hands with the two women in his life – but I really loved the one with him peeking through the bricks. She captured his mischievous nature, as well as his hopefulness.
Julia worked on refining the image and sent me these drawings:
My final selection was the image with Max and the bricks. There was something perfect about the bricks – representing all the barriers that Max has to come through both in the story and in his young life – but I also felt Max’s good-nature and sunny disposition peeking through. I asked Julia to remove the darkness and colored “stained glass” spots. As much as I liked them they gave it too magical a feeling.
This is the cover we wound up with!
Now all you need to do is pre-order my book and head on over to my website so you can read the story that fits these images!
Thanks again to Giselle for hosting me here on her site. It was not so easy to put up all these photos. I really appreciate it.
