Cover Reveal: ‘Kinslayer’ by Jay Kristoff and Contest Giveaway

Jay Kristoff

The Lotus War

Publication Date:
September 17, 2013

Thomas Dunne Books

The mad Shōgun Yoritomo has been assassinated by the Stormdancer Yukiko, and the threat of civil war looms over the Shima Imperium. The Lotus Guild conspires to renew the nation’s broken dynasty and crush the growing rebellion simultaneously – by endorsing a new Shōgun who desires nothing more than to see Yukiko dead.

Yukiko and the mighty thunder tiger Buruu have been cast in the role of heroes by the Kagé rebellion. But Yukiko herself is blinded by rage over her father’s death, and her ability to hear the thoughts of beasts is swelling beyond her power to control. Along with Buruu, Yukiko’s anchor is Kin, the rebel Guildsman who helped her escape from Yoritomo’s clutches. But Kin has his own secrets, and is haunted by visions of a future he’d rather die than see realized.

Kagé assassins lurk within the Shōgun’s palace, plotting to end the new dynasty before it begins. A waif from Kigen’s gutters begins a friendship that could undo the entire empire. A new enemy gathers its strength, readying to push the fracturing Shima imperium into a war it cannot hope to survive. And across raging oceans, amongst islands of black glass, Yukiko and Buruu will face foes no katana or talon can defeat.

The ghosts of a blood-stained past.

I love the US cover the best, it’s more dramatic and bold. The UK cover is more subdued and doesn’t really draw me in. I’m glad they didn’t remake the covers like other books. Such as Julie Kagawa’s Blood of Eden series and the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi.

I totally loved both the covers. I’ll have to be on the lookout to make sure I get the UK cover, though, to keep it consistent with my Stormdancer cover. ><

For once, these are cover reveals worth waiting for. The US ones are definitely my favorite – holy cow! – but the UK ones have great things going for them as well. Jason Chan really caught the vibe of the books.

Also? I love Yukiko’s goggles on the US one. I think it’s a subtle allusion to the steampunk used! Please let there be more chainsaw katanas!

I honestly think this is the first time that I have said this before, but I am a huge fan of both covers. They are very different, but they are also very similar and they both speak to the story in the book. I genuinely really like them both very much, for different reasons!

I think they both look good with their respective STORMDANCER covers, which is awesome. I do like the US cover more though, because it just has the action/kick-butt feel to it whereas the UK one is more peaceful. Like fighting vs. just practicing. Still, both are very cool!

Love the US cover. I’m a fan of Jason Chan’s cover illustrations. Yukiko looks more ferocious and awesome in Kinslayer. As for the UK version, it kept with the same theme so it’s not bad. Thanks.

  43. Christina B

    May 16, 2013 at 12:29 AM

I absolutely LOVE the US Cover of KINSLAYER! I think it’s even better than STORMDANCER’s because of the colours and Buruu in the background coupled with the Dragon and the blood and how disheveled Yukiko looks it adds to the mystery of KINSLAYER and battle that is still to be won and consequences that could come with it.

I love the UK cover because of the colours and the girl looking fierce and ready for a fight with her katana held high and leveled.

    Thank you so much!

I really love the colors in the US cover. I like that it has more movement as well. I think it’s so interesting to see US/Other Country covers just to compare what publishers think will sell better in each country.

Thanks for the post and giveaway!

I like them both, but prefer the US version – the colour stands out a little more for me, and it makes Yukiko look stronger (which she is).

  63. Amber

    May 15, 2013 at 5:34 PM

I like the US one way more than the UK one (a rare occurrence indeed). I’m not sure where to focus first with the UK one – the leaves stand out the most, and I seriously doubt the plot revolves around them. All the elements look very cut-and-pasted onto the background.
I love the US one – her eyes are immediately arresting, plus there’s awesome dragon vs griffin action in the background!

  64. Stella C

    May 15, 2013 at 4:54 PM

HOLY JUMPIN JACKS. That US cover might be my favourite cover this year! The detail in the background and the movement of her outfit is beyond mesmerizing. And I love the cohesion between this cover and the first. LOVE LOVE LOVE!

I think the UK cover is not as good but I love the golden leaf detailing.

  65. Desiree

    May 15, 2013 at 4:47 PM

I love both covers, but the US cover is my fave! I can’t wait to get it and set it next to its sister so I can revel in their beauty!

  66. Daphne

    May 15, 2013 at 4:46 PM

I like the U.S. cover better because Yukiko’s feral expression reminds me a lot of the connection she has with her thunder tiger. 🙂

I have to say that I like the US covers for the series a lot better so far. I liked the first UK cover okay, but I don’t care much for the new one. I don’t know if it’s the creepy blue face or yellow leaves, but it is most definitely not for me.

  70. leannessf

    May 15, 2013 at 3:53 PM

The US covers definitely kick butt over the UK covers – so much more intense and eye-catching!

    May 15, 2013 at 1:58 PM

I think both covers are wonderful, for different reasons. If you like a more traditional style of cover, the UK cover is amazing. If you like a more intense, fantasy-style cover, then the US version definitely wins.

Oh you know me Giselle! I LOOOOOVVVVVEEE this cover 🙂 I think I like the second one, the UK cover more than the North American one though. I like that fact that it is more light, and not so dark. And also not so comic book like. Although I do like the comic photo in the NA one 🙂 OH well obviously I can’t decide 😛

    Sweet giveaway! 😀
