Recap: Libba Bray Signing at Indigo

I’m so incredibly grateful that I have a book obsessed friend like Melissa to come with me to all these book signings. It’s always so much more fun when you get to share these events with friends 😀

Melissa (@mabrooks4)  and I

We got there about 1pm and grabbed our seats. Luckily there wasn’t a lot of people. Barely 20 people sitting, so we grabbed two seats. I found all the amazing Canadian bloggers I regularly tweet with: Siobhan @ Conversations of a Reading Addict, Michele @ Just A Lil’ Lost, Christa @ Hooked on Books, Angel @ Mermaid Vision Books, Sara @ Geek Girl’s Book Blog, Ardo @ A. A. Omer: Wordsmith, and Wendy @ Cupcake and Latte. Yes, it was definitely a blogger reunion all over again!

Melissa and I went to Starbucks and grabbed our coffee and tea. Coffee for me, tea for her, and went back down to sit. An Indigo employee (whose name I forgot! Ahh :() came over and started writing our names on sticky notes so we can get our books personalized. She was so friendly, informative and helpful.

More waiting around and socializing with the book bloggers, and making sure the camera was ready to go.

A little after 2pm, Libba finally came out, and introduced herself. My first impression is this author is just as amazing as her books. And one thing you can say about her is that she is downright hilarious. Love her! She wanted to share her very first ad of her book in the magazibe YM (Remember that magazine?). Situated right next to a Midol ad, it was quite small and got everyone laughing.

She then proceeded to share her fifth grade story that she wrote. I recorded a bit of her reading below.

Then came the Q&A section. Michele asked, “How she came up with the plot for Beauty Queens.” And Libba said her editor, none other than David Levithin asked her, “Can you work with Beauty Queens on a deserted island?” This is the one book I read from her and loved it. Seriously so much fun!

Some others asked a lot of writing tips because of NaNoMo. <start rant>One teen who shall not be named proceeded to ask a very spoiler-y question which caused me to turn around and give her the evil eye. Who does that? Really now! I couldn’t believe she would ask such a thing. Not everyone has read the books! Grr! </end rant>

Lastly the signings started! Whoo! We basically waited around until it was our turn to get our books signed. There were two ladies beside Libba, grabbing all our books and setting them up so she could sign, and one of them just so happened to be my HBG Canada contact! Hi Kaitlin!! *waves* I gave her a hug and told her how wonderful it was to meet her in person 😀

 Libba and I goofing off

Then it was time to meet Libba! I had a lot of books for her to sign. When you’re standing there, and you have no idea what to say, I get nervous and stayed quiet. Libba did tease me about not being able to have any button swag, when I asked her politely if I could have one lol. We took one goofy photo and one normal photo. She even told me to get a button for Jackie @ The Hardcover Obsession whose books I was getting signed.

What I Learned

    • Get a good night’s rest the night before. Your mind and body will thank you.
    • It is possible to be so shy and you have no idea what to say when you’re in the presence of such author awesomeness.
    • Book swag on the table is free for anyone to take. My Canadian politeness be damned!
    • If someone asks a spoiler-y question, giving her the evil eye will realize they did something wrong and will apologize for it.
    • Even your own book publisher contacts will recognize you from Twitter. See those display photos do work!

Thank you Libba Bray, Indigo at Yorkdale and HBG Canada for this amazing author event!

Oh my goodness, Libba reading her Fifth Grade story was HILARIOUS. I love it! Just yesterday I was looking at some of my work from primary school and though we were similar in age, Libba’s story was much more awesome than any of mine ever were. Whether as a Fifth Grader or the author she is now, she has talent (and this is coming from someone who hasn’t even read her books yet!). I won a copy of The Diviners which arrived this morning and I’m looking forward to starting it. Libba seems so cool and funny; reading about the signing and recent interviews makes me want to read it even more.

    Great recap!

The signing sounds like it was great! I haven’t read any of Libba Bray’s books, but I definitely want to 🙂

This is so cool! I actually haven’t read any of her books. I know, I know. Definitely plan on it though. I’ve never been to a signing but I already know I’d be SUPER shy around any author. I’d just think to myself that they have so many people waiting and they probably don’t care what I have to say, when in reality they’re some of the nicest people!

She is so stinkin cute! And The Diviners was amazing. I am completely jealous that you got to meet her. Completely happy for you too though!

    Awesome recap!

I would love if I could go to more signings but there are only a few in my country! 🙁 But I always love reading your posts about them!! 🙂

Did that person seriously apologize? =)

Awesome recap, I’m so sad that I missed this!

“It is possible to be so shy and you have no idea what to say when you’re in the presence of such author awesomeness.”

LMAO I know all about that, girl! I was totally like that when I met Veronica Roth. I was so excited, then it was my turn in line and I was just like O_O *mumble*

It sounds like you had a super awesome time! I love all the photos!!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets mute around authors! It’s either I can’t stop talking or Fangirling or I’m a mute lol
