Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands", she speaks many languages - not all of them human - and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

So this is why I love not reading a synopsis and just going into a book blind. Sometimes the cover can tell you very little or a lot. In this case, very little and the title was just as vague. Imagine go my surprise that this was a book about the seraphim versus chimaera.. I had no idea what “chimaera” was so I had to Google it at first.

The beginning starts off super quick. We’re thrust in her every day life of drawing classes, and it started off with her ex-boyfriend as the nude model for her class which to my amusement was hilarious. Yet as soon as she starts making wishes and they end up coming true, you realize she’s a different being. Not wholly human, with blue hair that wasn’t dyed at all. She’s an errand girl for Brimstone, monsters who are her family instead.

The pacing I have to admit threw me off. It felt backwards. Where we find out how everything happens in reverse. How they got there in the present. I was surprised at how much I liked it, though the past and present tenses threw me off pace and I had to remember which characters were which in each era. There is a lot of instant love in this romance, but it makes a ton of sense while you get to the ending.

Lani’s writing is just super beautiful. I love her magical way of writing. She twists words and sentences into beautiful paragraphs and quotes. I am such a fan of her writing style. Thank god I have all the books. Those cliffhanger endings are brutal!

I was going to say the beginning is the good part, when it’s all sparks and sparkles, before they are inevitably unmasked as assholes. (69)

Someone who would wait with an umbrella to walk her home in the rain, and smile like sunshine when he saw her coming. Who would dance with her on her balcony, keep his promises and know her secrets, and make a tiny world wherever he was, with just her and his arms and his whisper and her trust. (71)
Wishes are false. Hope is true. Hope makes its own magic. (143)
To take from the universe, you must give. (222)
Was there any fate more bitter than to get what you long for most, when it’s too late? (251)
Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there’s no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic. (288)
Love is a luxury. (363)
We steamed together of the world remade. (401)
Never repent of your own goodness, child. To stay true in the face of evil is a feat of strength. (406)

You know I have this book, the other cover, and it came to me completely by surprise. Can’t wait to get started on it. I love chimeras but I have to google the other thing instead. 😂😂😂
