Blood sings to blood, Froi . . .
Those born last will make the first . . .
For Charyn will be barren no more.

Three years after the curse on Lumatere was lifted, Froi has found his home... Or so he believes...

Fiercely loyal to the Queen and Finnikin, Froi has been trained roughly and lovingly by the Guard sworn to protect the royal family, and has learned to control his quick temper. But when he is sent on a secretive mission to the kingdom of Charyn, nothing could have prepared him for what he finds. Here he encounters a damaged people who are not who they seem, and must unravel both the dark bonds of kinship and the mysteries of a half-mad Princess.

And in this barren and mysterious place, he will discover that there is a song sleeping in his blood, and though Froi would rather not, the time has come to listen.

Gripping and intense, complex and richly imagined, Froi of the Exiles is a dazzling sequel to Finnikin of the Rock, from the internationally best-selling and multi-award-winning author of Looking for Alibrandi, Saving Francesca, On the Jellicoe Road and The Piper's Son.

review

This time, we’re following Froi’s journey to Charyn. He’s older, educated and is built to strike a man down trice his size. Queen Isaboe and her consort Finnikin have assigned Froi to murder the Charyn King. What Froi doesn’t expect is Quintana, the mad-as-a-hatter princess who has dual personalities that give him a reason to stay instead of leaving. What Froi encounters is a past that is even more deadly than that of his kingdom and he fights for his life to save her and quite possibly save himself. What he finds among the enemy’s land is a secret so life-alternating that he goes against his bond, and changes his allegiance.

We get to know Froi in this wonderful read into Charyn, and what we find is a story so clearly woven with mystery that I couldn’t believe what I just read. So many twists and turns, that it made me squeal and gasp at the right pages. I love how the story not only follow’s Froi, but that of Finnikan and Isaboe.

Loved this book! Characters that have distinct personalities, classic historical world building full of murder, and intrigue, and a plot that kept me on the edge of my seat, Froi of the Exiles is a perfect read. For fans of young and old, Melina Marchetta is a sheer genius that can write one heck of an adventure. Love the ending! I need more! Book three where art thou?

‘Well, you can’t climb all over me and expect it to just lie there,’ he said, trying to fight the pain of arousal. (227)
It’s not that I liked you least, it’s that I feared you the most. The reginita taught me to like you. There was a strange joy to her that lifted my spirits. But you, Quintana of Charyn, you made me love you. (577)

I love this series. I read this last year and it’s one of my favorite fantasy series. The world building is so amazing, the characters are very lovable. I think I had a book hang over when I finished the whole series. I’m planning to buy the paperbacks this year. I only got ebooks last year.

Oh my goodness! I loved the first book and Melinda is a wonderful writer. I am glad to hear there were many twists and turns. It really bothers me when books are too predictable.

Anyways, great review. I hope to read this soon!
