Devastated by the loss of his mother, Chase is trying to balance the life he’s been left with, a family he’s still getting to know, and power he never thought he’d have. He doesn’t understand why the Goddess has named him the Protector and granted him two gifts: the Mark, a tattoo that now covers his back, and the ring. But between getting interrogated by the Circle and psychic attacks from Riley, the Mark is the least of his concern. There’s a demon inside Rayna that’s fighting to be released, and it’s not her inner witch. It’s something else—a monster threatening to tear her apart.

As Chase struggles to control his magic, his enemies are closing in. Everyone has staked a claim on his ring, and destroying it may be his only chance to stop Riley. But Chase must decide if stopping him is worth risking the lives of everyone he cares about, or if protecting the ring will be enough to save his world.

Chase is back and with more problems to overcome. But he has help this time to aid him in his battle against evil. Riley, his psychotic father is trying to unleash the evil god Ithreal. With the help of half breed demons Rayna, Willy and Tiki, and Hunter Marcus they find the will to survive traveling to hell and back.

I love the fact that Chase is coming into his powers, and doesn’t even understand how to control them. It makes it a lot more interesting when things go wrong. He truly is a powerful character and I can’t wait to see how the series ends. As for the female characters, Rayna doesn’t disappoint. Turning into a werecat also helps, even though shifting into form causes her so much pain. Those scenes were brutal to read!

Can I say how genius the world building is in this book? And the insane action scenes? Love it! I love this series. It’s a wonderful read. Where else could you find wolves, werecats, witches, warlocks, hunters and demons all on one action packed novel? M. R. Merrick knows how to write a well written action scene. I can’t wait what he has in store for Chase and the rest of the characters.

Sooner or later a girl comes along, takes our breath away, and leads us on a wild goose chase. (103)
Nobody expects you to be their protector, Chase. You don’t have to be a hero. You’re a person like everyone else. (188)
