A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

review

Meira is one of the only eight Winterian refugees remaining in exile against the Spring kingdom. Her mission is to protect King Mather and to get back the Royal Conduit so their people can break free of Spring’s chains. Will she fulfill her destiny in protecting her home? Or will she have too much to handle?

I don’t know why it took me so long to read this. There was so much lovely action and I really enjoyed the spin on the kingdoms. It was fun trying to understand who and how their kingdoms looked like. I also loved seeing it all through Meira’s eyes. The pacing was pretty much perfect as that second half was so full of action. There is a hint of romance, but it didn’t overpower nor did it take away from the plot. I loved that it wasn’t the main focus. There’s nothing boring about this world! I also loved reading about the magical powers and what they could do with it. I think it was clever using the different seasons because they each play a huge role in the overall plot.

Sara Raasch has extensive world building skills and I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel so I can read some more!

Don’t let fear take hold of you—fear is a seed that, once painted, never stops growing.
Skirts were probably invented as a device to keep women from running away.
That’s why literature is so fascinating. It’s always up for interpretation, and could be a hundred things to a hundred different people. It’s never the same thing twice.
