Description

Just because Mel lives in New Whitby, a city founded by vampires, doesn’t mean she knows any of the blood-drinking undead personally. They stay in their part of town; she says in hers. Until the day a vampire shows up at her high school. Worse yet, her best friend, Cathy, seems to be falling in love with him. It’s up to Mel to save Cathy from a mistake she might regret for all eternity!

On top of trying to help Cathy (whether she wants it or not), Mel is investigating a mysterious disappearance for another friend and discovering the attractions of a certain vampire wannabe. Combine all this with a cranky vampire cop, a number of unlikely romantic entanglements, and the occasional zombie, and soon Mel is hip-deep in an adventure that is equal parts hilarious and touching.

Acclaimed authors Justine Larbalestier and Sarah Rees Brennan team up to create a witty and poignant story of cool vampires, warm friendships, and the changes that test the bonds of love.

Review

As soon as I read the description to this book I couldn’t help but add it to my list if books to buy. A book that pokes fun at vampires? Hell yes!

Team Human is a delightful read! I was laughing at some of thr jokes out loud, and didn’t even care when I got weird looks. The book is cute and laugh-out-loud funny! When you think of vampires, you think of creepy vampires that Buffy the Vampire Slayer hunts for right? Well in this world, vampires are known in society and are a part of society. They even have their own town that also includes their own police force. Not to mention suits and helmets that help them walk in sunlight.

Mel being the protective best friend that she is, is trying and failing to keep her bestie, Leah away from Francois, the new vampire attending her school. Mel did have this lioness-like quality with her friends and when her other best friend asks her for help she goes full out into the investigation.

I didn’t understand what the plot was until I kept reading. I mostly thought it’d be about Mel keeping her away from the vampire, only to fall in love with a vampire herself, but that’s not the case because she definitely plays for Team Human. Her love interest is wholly human and he was such a fun character to read.

“Ah, spilled blood, the vampire lover’s low-cut top,” I said. “Personally, I’d prefer a guy who wants to see my boobs.”—Mel

“Accused of nymphomania by a weirdo raised by vampires? I wasn’t going to tell anyone ever.”—Mel

“If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”—Mel

Great review! :D I love, love, love the sound of this one. It just seems so unique and hilarious, which is definitely not something you find very often in the vampire genre.
