Harper Price, peerless Southern belle, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance imbues her with incredible abilities, Harper's destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts.
Just when life can't get any more disastrously crazy, Harper finds out who she's charged to protect: David Stark, school reporter, subject of a mysterious prophecy and possibly Harper's least favorite person. But things get complicated when Harper starts falling for him—and discovers that David's own fate could very well be to destroy Earth.
With snappy banter, cotillion dresses, non-stop action and a touch of magic, this new young adult series from bestseller Rachel Hawkins is going to make y'all beg for more.
I didn’t know what to expect from this one because I didn’t even read the synopsis but I rather liked it. I was hovering between a 3 or a 4.
Harper annoyed me so much. I felt her denial for her feelings for David was rather ridiculous. And she treated Ryan like an object to be used and then discarded. She could be very mean and snobby and I really couldn’t like that. I am hoping that Harper will go through a character arc and realize how much she’s grown. Here’s to hoping she becomes more mature by the end of the series!
I didn’t get too much of the history between the Mages, Paladins and Oracles and want to know more. Though the pacing was a little off only because there was a lull within the middle when Harper was training and not a lot happens until the very end. The ending turned out to be rather convenient and predictable but it also turned out to be really awkward and is a good plot twist to get the drama going.
Overall, a solid read if you like your southern belles with a taste of butt-kicking powers, pick this one up. I’m curious as to see what happens in the series.
